03/09/22 Imai Gazette

Principal’s Message:

Dear Imai Families,

Have you noticed that we have planted new trees at the front of the school? The new trees are the replacements to the ones that were cut down during the summer to make room for the solar panels.

Report cards are being sent this Friday via email, please check that you receive it or notify the office. This Monday is a teacher service day which means our teachers will be hard at work looking at trimester two data and planning for instruction to best meet the needs of all students. We are also starting to plan for state testing in grades 3- so be on the lookout for more information as it is fast approaching. The Principal’s Coffee on 03/25 at 8:30 AM will cover all of the details you need to know about state testing.

Don’t forget to continue sending us snacks as we are planning our next delivery next Friday. Thank you in advance for your support with our kindness project.

Have a wonderful rest of the week.

Sincerely,

 Arline Siam

Principal

March Better Together Infographic

When women succeed, we all succeed. The same can be said for any of our community members who have felt the sting of marginalization or oppression. On International Women’s Day, let us appreciate all of the women and girls in our lives and the many intersecting identities that make them who they are. Let us never stop fighting for a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. After all, we are #BetterTogether. Please see the graphics attached to this newsletter, or visit https://www.mvwsd.org/bettertogetherMVWSD.

The Talk: “The Culture of Success” on Mar. 16th

“Pull yourself up by your bootstraps,” is a common phrase used in American political discourse, particularly around self-reliance and emotional resilience. Today’s culture of success was built upon our ideas, beliefs, and values. However, the pandemic and resulting shifts in our daily lives have called us to reflect on our foundational beliefs about the success and emotional resilience of our children. Let's talk about it.

You are cordially invited to MVWSD’s next Roundtable event: “The Talk: The Culture of Success – Our Beliefs About Success and Emotional Resilience” on Wednesday, March 16 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm. Register at: http://mvw.sd/talk316.

Update on mask mandate

Even though the state will be downgrading face-mask requirements to a strong recommendation for indoor areas (with some exceptions) beginning on March 12, our students will still be required to wear masks for the near future. To learn more about the timeline and factors MVWSD is considering to determine when/if we make changes to the mask requirement, please click here.

Health and Wellness Parenting Tip: Belly Breathing

Our mood is influenced by physical sensations in our body. When we feel stressed, we tend to take quick and shallow breaths. By taking slow and deep breaths, we can signal our body to relax.

Watch this video to learn more about how belly breathing can help your child (or you) feel more relaxed.

To belly breathe:

  1. Choose a comfortable position, such as sitting on a chair or laying on your back.
  2. Place one hand on your belly.
  3. Take a deep breath in through your nose while you count to four. As you breathe in, your belly should rise.
  4. Hold your breath while you count to five.
  5. Breathe out through your mouth while you count to six. As you breathe out, your belly should flatten.

You may need to repeat these steps for 5-10 minutes before you start to feel relaxed. By practicing these steps, you can learn to relax after stressful situations.

PTA News:

WALKATHON NEWS AND UPDATES: We're looking forward to a great spring event and seeing everyone together back on campus on Saturday, March 19! We've got an amazing 75% of students registered to participate.

· Can you still register? Yes, you can still register online via Formsite until Wednesday, March 16. We will NOT be registering participants at the event or after March 16. Extra t-shirts were ordered but we can't guarantee shirt availability for remaining registrations.

· WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Not enough volunteers will mean longer lines for check-in, prizes and snacks. Moms AND Dads, please consider signing up for a one-hour shift sometime during our event. You'll be there anyway, right? Help us out to keep things moving and more fun for all. You might even make new friends while you're at it. Thank you!

· PLEDGES: While we don't have a specific fundraising goal this year, we do have costs to cover and it's all a practice for future walkathon events. So we're offering an incentive: all parents who create a Pledgestar page will have a chance to win 2 tickets to Symphony San Jose and a $50 gift card to A Slice of NY Pizza via a drawing that will take place April 1. Maybe you or your student can collect just a pledge or two from a friend, neighbor or family member? Pledgestar is open for pledges thru March 31.

PTA MEETING NEXT WEEK: Join us next Wednesday evening, March 16, for an important general association meeting including elections for next school year! Register here for the Zoom meeting and you'll receive meeting materials that day. The meeting agenda and slate of officers for election (with vacancies) are attached.

Can you step up and help? We've got a few open board positions to fill! No experience is necessary, and we need fresh faces to help us with new ideas to propel us into the future.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR RETURNS: We're excited to announce the Scholastic Book Fair is returning to Imai Elementary later in March! In-person sales will be March 22-25 with a familiar, welcome and safe event for our students and families. The event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. All purchases benefit our school and library. More details coming soon!

YEARBOOK COVER CONTEST - “The Future is Bright!”  Would your student like their artwork to grace the cover of this year’s Amy Imai yearbook? Have them enter our design contest! Our theme is lego-blocks inspired with "The Future is Bright!” however the artist wants to interpret it. Winning artwork could appear on the front or back cover or maybe elsewhere in the book. Artwork can be submitted to the office or by email to [email protected] by March 21.

An attached flyer has full design guidelines, including the following:

· Artwork should follow this year's lego-blocks-inspired theme: The Future is Bright!

· Students may even build something first and then draw it!

· Use lots of color, including the background!

· Be bold! Use bold, high-contrast mediums such as crayons, acrylic paints, markers, etc.

· Artwork should be roughly 8.5” x 11” in size, vertical (portrait) orientation, with .5” margins

· Do NOT use the word “lego” in your artwork!

· On the back please include student’s name, grade, and parent’s email address
